UFC 300 FINALLY has its main event.
Despite rumblings of Israel Adesanya coming back to fight middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis, capitalizing on their still-smoldering rivalry, the promotion will instead call upon light heavyweight titleholder Alex Pereira to defend his 205-pound strap opposite former division kingpin Jamahal Hill on Sat., April 13, 2024 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
I’m not sure I would file Pereira vs. Hill under “insane,” but it’s an important fight for the weight class. Hill was forced to surrender his strap last July after blowing out his achilles tendon while playing basketball. As for Pereira, who also held gold at 185 pounds, his victory over Jiri Prochazka at UFC 295 was not without its share of controversy, so a definitive finish over “Sweet Dreams” should silence the shamers once and for all.
Fan reactions to the UFC 300 main event have been mixed, which was likely to happen regardless of which two fighters the promotion slid into the top spot. Over the last few months, names like Conor McGregor, Jon Jones, Khamzat Chimaev — and even Khabib Nurmagomedov — have all been linked to the “Sin City” headliner but in the end, it was “Poatan” who stopped up the prime real estate.
